Highlights:
  • "Monstro" by Downtown Boys is such a good and unapologetic song about feminism: "Today we will scream at the top of our lungs that we are brown, that we are smart!" The singer, Victoria Ruiz does just that - screaming, sometimes in Spanish, and celebrating herself, her body and her intelligence.
  • "Don't Wanna Fight"by Alabama Shakes because Brittany Howard's voice shinesin this song!
  • "Female Trouble" by Thee Tsunamis because of the brilliant lyrics "because looking good has never smelled this bad" and I am a sucker for the fuzzy, guitar and drum-heavy songs like this one.
  • "#1 Must Have" by Sleater-Kinney because of the lyrics "Now who would have thought this riot grrrl's a cynic/ but they took our ideas to their marketing stars" and how important it is to note the commercialization of women's bodies and fashion trends. Sleater-Kinney is always a good idea. I also love the ending's lyrics: "And for all the ladies out there I wish we could write the next marketing bid"
  • "American Girl" by Elle King. I played her last week and I just love how her voice sounds and I just love her twist on this Tom Petty cover.
  • "Time to Go Home" by Chastity Belt. Chastity Belt is a band that I have been listening to non-stop since their latest release and I love the empowerment of their lyrics and honesty. Another fave by them: "Cool Slut"
