Miami had a great turn out at the Anti-Trump protest in Downtown. There was such a great display of people of all ages and backgrounds. The man who demeans women, insults people who are differently abled and has no regard for people unlike him does not represent me.

Visiting L.A. for a few days turned out to be one of the coolest nights of my life because I got to dance onstage with one of my favorite bands - HINDS ! I had originally planned to explore the city but I saw that the girls were playing right were I was staying for a bit and just like that I bought a ticket to see them that night. I was taken away by the passion and energy they omitted and how synchronized they all were. I got to say hi to them after the show and they were absolutely lovely and I'd highly recommend seeing them in a city near you. It was a show I'd love to relive again and again. #VivaHinds photo from April 2016

I’m so happy to accept this! Thank you to everyone who has joined me on this journey of discovering new riot grrrls, delving into new feminisms and important messages through music. And I highly encourage everyone & future DJs to make the effort to go out and do something that you believe in; make music, make art, support your girlfriends because your thoughts are important! Doing Riot Grrrl has not been easy and I’ve done a lot of research but that has definitely paid off! Love you all and support your local riot grrrls: “BECAUSE I believe with my wholeheartmindbody that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can, and will change the world for real."

women, gender and rineke dijkstra

Rineke Dijkstra is a Dutch artist interested in photographing subjects in new and profound ways. She is one of the main artists I decided to research because of the amount of photographs she made that focused on women of all different types of ages, sizes and races. In this sense, her artwork is a feminist act in which she showcases women as they are, without any sense of commodification, oversexualization or expectations placed on them. Feminism is about accepting people as they are, without seeing any one person as better. In this piece, the subject is a female dressed in a black bathing suit, with an anklet on, her medium length dark hair. The artist does not reveal much, but at the same time, she reveals the girl’s self consciousness in the way that she is posed. In this series, the people are gazing directly at the audience. These young subjects are almost bare, showing themselves to the audience. It seems as though there is no camera in front of them. There is nothing in between

ana mendieta

Ana Mendieta’s works are ethereal combinations of body, nature and the relationships that we have with the Earth. She has created many feminist pieces that further relate to womenand their connection with the Earth and others. One of the most poignant and feminist art pieces that I came across in my research was Ana Mendieta’s Untitled (Rape Scene) which was a response to a rape case that occurred in the Iowan university campus she attended. According to the Tate it was a: Response to a brutal and highly publicized rape and murder of a nursing student, Sara Ann Otten, by another student in March 1973. The following month Mendieta invited her fellow students to her apartment where, through a door left purposefully ajar, they found her in the position recorded in this photograph, which recreated the scene as reported in the press. Some time later, Mendieta recalled that her audience ‘all sat down, and started talking about it. I didn’t move. I stayed in position about an hour. It rea

riot grrrl of the week: MAYA ANGELOU

Phenomenal Woman BY MAYA ANGELOU Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies. I say, It’s in the reach of my arms, The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It’s the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can’t touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them, They say they still can’t see. I say, It’s in the arch of my back, The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomena

riot grrrrl of the week: BARBARA KRUGER

Image
It’s International Women’s Day today so you should tune in to Riot Grrrl from 6-8pm . We are highlighting women artists from all around the world and celebrating womanhood! This week’s riot grrrl is BARBARA KRUGER.  Kruger’s artwork has a firm basis in social, cultural, and political critique. She juxtaposes imagery with text containing criticism of sexism/misogyny and cultural power structures. Much of her text questions the viewer about feminism, classicism, consumerism, and individual autonomy and desire.

riot grrrl of the week: HANNAH WILKE

Image
Hannah Wilke by Evelyne Zapata Self Portraiture; self-preservation and sensuality. These terms are all relevant to the well-known feminist Hannah Wilke’s art work. Throughout her short life, she presented herself in several settings all with one thing in common - they represent a sense of preservation for her and women in general. “Wilke used the various mediums of photography, performance, sculpture, and video to examine and challenge prevailing notions of femininity, feminism, and sexuality” (Guggenheim). “Hannah Wilke was an influential second-generation feminist artist whose work in sculpture and performance art challenged gender stereotypes and probed the relationship between aesthetics, eroticism, and politics. Wilke began her career as a sculptor, creating pieces in clay and terracotta that evoke both organic forms and female genitalia, a symbol of women’s empowerment in the 1970s” (Princeton Art Museum). One of the earliest works that Wilke made was when she was in her
