In Defense of RIOT GRRRL

I'm a firm believer in girl power, girl gangs and solidarity with all people. The reason I started my radio show is because of something Kathleen Hanna said in the early 90s and what she has reiterated recently. The riot grrrl movement is a bigger part of the feminist discussion in where some are reluctant to label themselves as feminist but have the ideals of someone pro-feminist in the idea that they want to be seen as musicians as equally as anyone else and I completely support that. I don't think you have to label yourself or your music as feminist to have your music felt by other people in the vein of something pro-feminist. Music nowadays doesn't have to be be considered 'feminist' to speak about experiences that are marginalized and unrecognized. I want people to listen to big joanie and skinny girl diet in the same way that they would listen to critique bikini kill and girl pool. The reason I started my show, however, was to bring a platform to people t

Women of Color feminism

Image
I came across this video of four women reading slam poetry and I quickly found myself agreeing to everything they were saying. Feminism was not intended for white women and didn't start out that way. Some of the biggest proponents and the reason third wave feminism really gained momentum was because of women such as bell hooks and Audre Lorde who were not afraid to voice their opinions about the gender inequalities in life. They were brave women, just as these four women are, too. One woman says "Rosie the Riveter did what women have been doing for years" which really struck me. Women have been writing feminist theories and stories for a long time now, but as soon as a white woman raised her voice, she became an instant household icon. In the same manner, Emma Watson gave a speech on feminism and gained international celebrity and recognition for her work. Yet, the same things she said has been written by other women, who happen to be of color. It's clear that

Motherhood

Image
T he price of motherhood comes at a great cost. Women are very much at the center of their children's upbringing. It is even more so today, where, according to Ann Crittenden's The Price of Motherhood, "among women in their thirties, by far the most common occupation is full-time housekeeping and caregiving" (17). This article points out many alarming facts about the disparity that involve men and women and children. She is right when she says that raising children has become synonymous for parenting, yet women are the ones who are really doing much of the work. I must concur with this because of my experience in my own family and with my friends'. In fact, one study that Crittenden cites states that, "'despite and overall increase in the relative involvement of fathers, household activities, caring for infants, studying and reading (with children) remain domains in which fathers have a very low relative contribution... when a wife earns more than half

Investing in Women

Image
Investing in women is something so simple but so important for the advancement of our society. Women are so vital to the upbringing of children and therefore our future. The article "The Price of Motherhood" by Ann Crittenden clearly demonstrates what a positive impact women can have on society. She claims that research shows that "as women become better educated, they tend to devote more time and attention to their children. Apparently, as women's horizons expand, and their opportunities multiply, their hopes and aspirations for their offspring increase as well. They delay child-bearing, have fewer children, and invest more time and resources in each one. All over the world, across continents and cultures, as women advance, they stop "having babies" and start "raising children" (20). This article is very relevant today because more and more women in the Western world are becoming college graduates and achieving higher level jobs. This artic

The Straight Mind

Heteronormativity is something pervasive and evident in every aspect of our daily lives. The piece titled "The Straight Mind" by Monique Witting explains how heteronormativity can be oppressive to is embedded to our lives ever since we are children and how people who do not subscribe to said ideals can feel threatened by them. This piece has been personally one of the most helpful to read because the language was very clear and persuasive about how we should not subscribe to ideals that have been placed in society from centuries ago. In the twenty-first century, it is clear that gender is a social construct and this should be more clear in our society. Of course, this is easier said then done, but it is becoming more apparent, especially with more academic and scientific research. There are so many examples that I can think of that encourage heteronormativity from a very young age and this can potentially dominate other ways of thinking for the future. For instance, every mo

Gender Treachery

Homophobia is, unfortunately, prevalent in many aspects of today's society. As Patrick Hopkins explains in his article "Gender Treachery," it is because "homosexuality is often viewed as a threat to a man's sense of self-his personhood" (129). This is common with many people because if someone encounters something they don't understand or prescribe to, they tend to feel threatened. Many people tend to run away from what they fear. This has permeated into culture that demonizes the LGBTQA community. Many people resort to bullying, name calling of people they deem as 'other' or non heterosexual. Hopkins mentions some ways that he was bullied in school, with the word 'girl.' He claims, "'Girl', like these other terms, signifies a failure of masculinity, a failure of living up to a gendered standard of behavior, and a gendered standard of identity" (130). This statement shows how negative femininity is viewed in society. Ho

Body Images

Image
As any female can tell you, beauty standards imposed on women are apparent in every area of society. From the food you buy at your grocery store to the clothes you wear and the shows you watch. This is not anything new, in fact, these messages are ingrained to our everyday thoughts. In fact, Susan Bordo has thoroughly explained the history of the way that beauty has been perceived throughout the decades and how it has, in fact, changed several times. For example, Bordo claims "the bulging stomachs of successful mid-nineteenth-century businessmen and politicians were a symbol of bourgeois success, an outward manifestation of their accumulated wealth... the ideal began to be appropriated by the status-seeking middle class, as slender wives became the showpieces of their husbands' success." Unfortunately, the idea that being slender is good has been perpetuated much too often in society. Society's image of beautiful has translated to slender bodies, but it does not equa

Justice for Native American Women

Sexual crimes are a huge problem on Native American reservations, where nearly 40 percent of women report they have experienced some type of domestic violence. And an estimated 80 percent of Native American rape survivors say they were assaulted by non-Indian men, since the current legal system essentially empowers serial rapists who know they can get away with it. - A Historic Turning Point Reading Andrea Smith's article titled "Sexual Violence as a tool of Genocide" was very powerful for me to read. It was so useful to read the history behind violence and how people have grown accustomed to seeing such acts of violence in media yet are afraid to talk about it in the home. Seeing these cases in movies about colored women (think Tyler Perry movies) has brought these topics to mainstream attention. Despite these movies focusing on colored stereotypes, I still think this topic should be brought up in new forms of art. What really stood out to me was Smith's quo
